Thistle and Blackbirds

thistle sketch with watercolor
Red Wing Blackbird on thistle

Beginnings are always powerful! A little sunshine today was all the excuse I needed to visit the Refuge. I love the shape of the thistles, they remind me of Elizabethan collars. A delight to sketch their beauty. And the blackbirds, a treat any day.

am smitten with your thistle image--and jealous that you have red-wings there already

thistles are so amazing-love thier fushia pink flower in the summer too--as do the finches:D *someone told me--don't know if it's true-that the invention of velcro happened when someone put 2 thistles together...

I just love your description of the thistles. I never noticed how much color they had in them until I saw your picture!

In Scotland we call these Teasels to differentiate them from what we know as thistles. Our national flower is of course the thistle with its purple head.
