Same shapes, different colors

24 x 24, pastel on sanded paper
These colors feel normal to me. Vibrant blues and violets and yellows. It's as if these colors are my best friends, or maybe they are my comfort colors (like comfort food with fewer calories!).

Reminds me of Van Gogh's "Portrait of a Peasant" painting I saw at the Norton Simon Museum recently.

How do you select your palette for a painting? By mood? By habit? By trial and error?

Kvan--
I like this one a lot. Love the blues. I pick my palette by what feels good at the time. But sometimes my palette picks me. Some colors are pushier than others. They usually win.

this is a really nice combination of reality and abstract..and the colors are "delicious"!

Sam -- the blues grab me every time.

Celeste -- thanks. I was hoping for that kind of combo.

Lovely color choices! It feels like the golden hills of California with the warmth of the summer sunshine. The contrast with the intense blue sky creates a vibrant feeling. It's sometimes surprising to see how the color choices, sometimes subtle evoke such different feelings. Something I should remember when making my color choices rather than just trying to be "realistic".
