Migratory Stops

October is a magical month at the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge. The summer-dry ponds start to fill again and migrating birds come back. Sometime this month, the Sandhill Cranes will make their magnificent stop here on their way south. Today I watched this mother Nutria and her four babies as they ate their leafy greens. A little early for Cranes, I guess.

On my own again in the studio, playing with oil paint and fruit. I joked today with good friend, Celeste Bergin, that I am "adding more crappy art to the planet." She assured me that eventually I wouldn't make crap. At least, we both hope that's true! Maybe Crappy Art is just a migratory stop on my way toward painting Something Beautiful.

Being out of bear country means you can stop and take pictures in the woods again. There's room on the internet for all the art especially when you are doing award wining oil paintings. It will happen in no time.

Are nutrias really munching on the Ridgefield Refuge? They'll stop at nothing! They'd eat your fruit. And your oil paint. And your still-life, crappy or not.

I love Nutria. I think they are beautiful. I saw my first one on a golf course and I loved how big and shiny he was! Gorgeous!
This is superb fruit! high five! (you don't really think that is crappy fruit.... do you? it looks GREAT)

Hi Carrie. My bear anxiety is down from Alaska levels, that's true. Now I can stop and enjoy the wildlife without fearing for my life!

Hi Sam. The nutria are a problem. Many trees have chicken wire and other barriers around them to keep them from nutria destruction. The babies were cute. Aren't babies always cute?

Celeste! The fruit may be good (high five back)but the painting is still crappy. I hate drapery. Do you hate drapery? I think I will do the next ones without drapery. Just say NO to drapery! We should make a sign! I'll bring it to my next session with Thomas. A yellow diamond with a line through a drape!
