Eagle Island

It's been a while since I've been boating and I can tell that I am rusty at it. I couldn't seem to grab the ring on the mooring buoy, and it took several attempts (maybe 7 or 8!) before I inserted the boat hook into the ring and got a line attached. The folks in the sailboat nearby had some unexpected but jolly slapstick comedy to watch! By the 5th time, I was laughing so hard, I could barely speak! Another go round for moderate embarrassment! And again, for total humiliation! To be fair, the wind and current were against us, but no matter. Laughter is good for the soul!

Once we were secured, I made a big cup of coffee and pulled out my sketching gear.

I did this sketch while we were en route. The area is called "Devil's Passage." I could barely see the Cascade Mountains in the distance.

Like Celeste I think coffee sounds like a great idea sketching in a boat now that is something else. Never tried that and I guess at my age I never will.

Your watercolors from the boat make me feel landlocked. Which I am. Did you know that Puget and the San Juans are a Rorschach of the Downeast coast?

The ladder makes me curious--is it a companionway or a boarding ladder?

Your watercolor sketches look great! And to accomplish this while the boat is swaying.
This makes me look forward to the marina in Ilwaco.

Hey Celeste! We'll have to share a cup of coffee soon and compare sketchbooks! You've been busy, too!

Ralph -- want to join us? Sketching on the boat isn't always easy, but when someone is determined, it's not too bad. The scenery keeps changing so it's best to keep loose and gestural!

SamArtDog -- you are landlocked! You must come to the west, to the water! The ladder goes from the cockpit (the lowest level at the back of the boat) to the sundeck. I often sit at the top of the ladder and look at the landscape views behind us. A cup of coffee nearby, a roof over my head, it's pretty sweet!

Suzanne -- I only notice the swaying when I get back on land. I'll be holding on the walls in the shower for a bit now! Thanks for your comment!

Next trip is DownEast to visit the 'rents. But I love the NW coast, maybe more (don't tell them). Must get there asap.
