Painting at Port McNeill, north of the 50th parallel

Cold and windy and a little rainy at Port McNeill today. It was a busy day today, getting perishables aboard and stowed for our next piece of water. I don't know how soon we'll be at a place with a decent market, so I bought a lot of nice produce today, among other things. Peppers and carrots, onions and apples. Even some cherries. And, after dinner, it finally stopped raining long enough for me to sit on the sundeck and paint.

After I finish a painting, I make a few notes in my painting journal. In this painting, I was especially trying to make the sky and water look and feel like the cool, cloudy evening. It's only 51 degrees!

Before we left home, I cut sheets of acetate that exactly fit into my portfolio. As I finish paintings, I number them and tape them to the acetate. Even if I paint enough to use up all of the paper I brought, I think that I will have enough acetate to protect the paintings.

Hi Katherine

For a change, are you goint to paint some fruit and vegetables?
Weston used to photograph his meal ingredients before he ate them!
;~)

Some material questions:
What's your board made of -- foamcore, composite?
Is the tape double-sided?
Do you use fixative? If so, what kind?
Is the acetate (very clever, btw) rigid?
Are your pastels really that fat, or is it the camera angle. Thought you used Unison.

We're having the same exact weather here. Low 50s, low clouds and lots o rain. But no boat and no ports o call. You win.

Suggestion:
Photograph and post pictures of your charts, so we know where you are.

Hi Dave! Thanks for stopping in. I'll think about painting some ingredients before cooking with them. Tonight will be chili -- maybe I can paint this big Vidalia onion I have to go in it!

Hi Sam! Material answers:

my board is Gatorboard, 1/2"

tape is regular wide masking tape

no fixative, not ever

the acetate is 5ml, so it's not rigid, but doesn't roll up on me like the thinner 2-3ml stuff does

wide angle lens is not kind to the pastels and makes them look chubby, but they are predominantly Unisons with some hand-made ones in there, too

Thanks for the answers. Just what I thought, but why don't I see tape on the paper's front?

I use Kitty Wallis' method of attaching paper to the board: I first put a piece of tape on the wrong side of the paper with an edge sticking out, then I tape over the part that sticks out and stick it to the board. The first tape pieces are little tabs that are covered by the second pieces as I attach it to the board. Make sense?

Brilliant! That was a good thing to learn today.
